All About Buttonholes: How to Pin Them Perfectly

Hello,

Buttonholes are a hot topic in our wedding planning chats – where should they go, who should wear them, and how do you even attach them? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here’s a quick guide to everything you need to know about buttonholes, so you can tick one more thing off your wedding to-do list with confidence.

Who Wears a Buttonhole or Corsage at a wedding?

Traditionally, buttonholes are worn by men, while corsages are worn by women. However, who wears them is entirely up to you! Typically, buttonholes are reserved for the VIPs in your wedding party, such as:

  • The Groom: The groom’s buttonhole is often more elaborate to complement the bridal bouquet and make him stand out.

  • The Best Man

  • Ushers, Grooms Men, and Pageboys

  • Fathers of the Bride and Groom

  • Grandfathers

Of course, you can extend this list to include anyone else you’d like to honour.

Where to Pin a Buttonhole?

Buttonholes are traditionally placed on the left lapel, just above the heart. They should sit horizontally centred and parallel to the edge of the lapel for the perfect look.

How to Attach a Buttonhole to a Suit

Attaching a buttonhole may seem tricky, but with these steps, you’ll have it secured in no time:

  1. Position the Buttonhole: Hold the buttonhole flat against the suit at the correct spot, with the blooms facing upward and the stems pointing downward.

  2. Pin It Securely: Use one of the pearl-headed pins we provide. Start from underneath the lapel, threading the pin through the ribbon on the buttonhole (to avoid damaging the stems). Push the pin through the fabric and ribbon just below the flower heads, then thread it back through the fabric at a downward angle, creating a stitch-like hold.

  3. Add a Second Pin: For extra security, repeat the process with a second pin.

Pro Tip: Pinning your own buttonhole can be tricky! Either attach it before putting on your jacket, or ask someone for help. If we’re there on the day, we’d be happy to help you pin them on perfectly!

For Children: For younger children, we provide a safety pin, which is easier to use. Their buttonholes are smaller and lighter, so a safety pin will hold them securely – just pin it on like a birthday badge!

When to Put on the Buttonholes?

We deliver buttonholes in labelled boxes, so you’ll know exactly who each one is for. We recommend putting them on just before the ceremony or photos to keep them looking fresh and beautiful. This timing helps avoid any damage from hugs, heat, or general movement, especially in warmer weather.

As always, we’re here to help if you need us!

Until next time,
